Today’s blog post is not about my business but someone else’s! Meet Lauren, who is a Winston Salem Doula. Lauren and I “met” online a few months ago. I am a very strong believer in having a Doula at your birth. If you are pregnant make sure to contact Lauren ASAP for a consultation and to get on her books! She takes only a limited number of births a month so she can give each of you the time you need <3 Read below what Lauren has to say!
When asked what a doula does, the typical response is “a woman supporting another woman through labor”. However, a doula does so much more!
I organize a plan to help map goals and aspirations for a mother’s birth experience – and help navigate the next steps if that plan is thrown out the window due to changes or complications. My purpose is to offer encouragement when a mother is not sure if she is able to make it through the next contraction. I calm when fear threatens to take over. If the mother is using natural methods to handle pain and discomfort, I explain and exhibit different movements and positions to help her cope and to help baby move where needed. When the baby arrives, I can assist during that first overwhelming week in various roles the mother may need.
While my focus does revolve primarily around the mother, the partner benefits as well. The partner has piece of mind knowing the mother is never alone if a restroom or coffee break is needed. If feeling engulfed in the ebbs and flows of the labor experience, I encourage the partner to acknowledge their worth and the need for their support. The partner may have their own set of fears, and I offer a calming presence to help alleviate these. In essence, I support the mother AND the partner.
Finally, the doula should be an essential part of your birth team. Whether birthing at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Maya Angelou Women’s Health and Wellness Center in Winston-Salem or Natural Beginnings Birth and Wellness Center in Statesville, my job as your doula is to work with you, your partner, AND your obstetrician and/or midwife for the best care possible for you and your baby. Your goal should be to have an amazing birth experience in either Winston-Salem or Statesville, to be healthy at the end of it, and to have a healthy baby. Let me show you the many ways a doula can help you achieve this goal.
